‘Now You See Me’ Movie Review

I usually don’t like movies about magicians yet I was pleasantly pleased with this movie. ‘Now You See Me’ is cast quite well. The magicians are believable with one skeptic that makes us not believe in the “magic”, lol. There are twists throughout this crime/thriller movie that will keep you intrigued.

‘After Earth’ Movie Review

If you’re a Sci-fi movie enthusiast, then you’ll find this movie mildly entertaining. There are moments with shock value and futuristic creatures yet the weak storyline becomes predictable as the movie continues. This movie is really 100 minutes of Jaden building his acting skills to become a movie blockbuster contender in years to come; Will takes the backseat to let his son shine. ‘After Earth’ is not a flop and I did find myself routing for Jaden’s character, Kitai. This is a family affair movie in front of the camera, as well as, behind the camera. Will wrote the story and he and Jada are amongst the producers with M. Night Shyamalan as one of the executive producers the Director and screenplay. I usually don’t like films of M. Night Shyamalan yet this one gets a passing grade. It was good to see Zoe Kravitz in another movie. I also noticed another “pinkett” as a producer.

‘Fast & Furious 6’ Movie Review

My team of “fave” guys are back and they are FASTER than ever! The sixth film in this franchise is faster and louder. Without a doubt this film is a pre-Summer big screen hit. Vin, Paul, Dwayne and most of the family are back to entertain us. Tyrese’ character Roman is even funnier. There are a couple of over the top stunt scenes yet you know what? It works just because it’s the characters of Fast & Furious. As usual there is an end credit scene so don’t rush out. This scene sets up ‘Fast & Furious 7’ that will be released next year July, 2014!! Yes, I wrote next year. As far as I’m concerned they can keep this franchise going to infinity and beyond, lol.

‘The Hangover Part 3’ Movie Review

Part 3 is more enjoyable than Part 2 as the original remains a classic if this is indeed the end to the wolfpack. This 3rd edition has many laughs yet there is a “real” (as you can get for this franchise) storyline to follow. Zack’s character is still the same as we would want him to be; Mr. Chow is on overload; the guys are back trying to put everything together. A new character is introduced “Cassie” and it’s a good add for actress Melissa McCarthy. There is an end credit scene so don’t leave at the end of the movie.

‘Star Trek Into Darkness’ Movie Review

I remember how excited I was to see ‘Star Trek’ in 2009 with no expectations of the franchise from previous movies (which I don’t think I’ve ever watched any of them in entirety) or the TV shows (which I was a big fan of ‘..Next Generation’). I may need to see ‘Into Darkness’ again because it was good yet I wanted/expected more from a 4 year hiatus. It reminded me of a real good 2 hour plus long ‘Star Trek’ telvision episode with no commercials. Well, that is good but I remember saying after the 2009 film….”that was great!”. Spoiler alert: I wanted a much longer scene or screen time with the Klingons (that’s who we remember most as the enemy, lol, at least I do). Khan made a formidable enemy yet I was expecting bigger and better. I saw it in 3-D yet to me it didn’t add anything to the movie. I would suggest 2D (save your money). You will see one cameo from the original TV cast yet once again with this movie; I don’t know why ALL of the originals can’t/won’t make a cameo appearance (to bring nostalgia and/or connection etc.. to this younger generation of their characters). J.J. Abrams needs to work on getting a cameo of all of them in the next movie and more of the Klingons.

PG-13 132 minutes long (skip the 3-D); probably great visuals in IMAX. Entertaining with good comedic lines yet I left feeling something was missing.

‘The Great Gatsby’ Movie Review

This movie is visually stunning! I didn’t know it was in 3-D yet I was pleasantly surprised and I did enjoy the effects. The movie is long (143 minutes) and the storyline could have wrapped 30 minutes sooner. This is a love story, pretty good acting, reminded me of a musical yet it didn’t work for me. I also didn’t think Jay-Z’s music connected to the Era.
PG-13; Drama/Romance; 143 minutes

‘Peeples’ Movie Review

Pretty good ensemble cast that doesn’t seem to connect the character relationships together well. There are a few laugh out loud scenes yet more scenes that the script wants to be funny that aren’t. I did enjoy S. Epatha Merkerson character…I’ve never seen her in a light and comedic role. It was good to see Diahann Carroll and Melvin Van Peeples on the big screen. Not a flop of a movie yet not nearly as good as it should be with the talent available (especially David Alan Grier). PG-13; comedy; 95 minutes

‘Iron Man 3’ Movie Review

Marvel movies can do no wrong with me, lol. Tony Starks is back with his many Iron Man suits in the 3rd edition movie for this character. There are lots of laughs and the action scenes will not disappoint. The movie is in 3D (which I got really cool 3D glasses at the advance screening) yet I wouldn’t recommend the extra money to see it in 3D. Don’t forget to stay for the EXTRA SCENE after the FINAL credits. In theatres 5/3 (and lots of screenings this evening 5/2). PG 13 130 mins.

4 1/2 stars out of 5.

‘The Iceman’ Movie Review

Here’s a total retro throw back movie of a true story of a serial contract hit man. Richard Kuklinski is the best father and husband in his private life yet little did his family know of his “bloody” job. He was finally arrested in 1986. A few hard to watch scenes in this crime/thriller/drama movie which has an R rating and is 106 minutes long. Worth catching and probably showing in artsy theatres on May 3.
