‘Getaway’ Movie Review

Getaway banner

With this being the last Holiday weekend in Summer you’d hope for a good movie this weekend after a long Summer of blockbusters. ‘Getaway’ does nothing to engage movie goers this weekend. There’s some good action scenes that are a little reminiscent of ‘Fast & Furious’ yet this movie in no way compares to the F&F franchise. The storyline is weak (most of the scenes are in the car); Selena’s acting is weak; I expected more from Ethan Hawke and especially Jon Voight. The movie ends trying to set up a sequel yet if they don’t recast the entire movie and write a new script, the sequel will fail as I predict this one will. I did recognize Rebecca Budig of ABC’s All My Children in the movie; she portrays the wife Ethan’s character. Don’t waste your money on this one.

‘The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones’ Movie Review

Mortal Instruments

Adventure/fantasy movies are a couple of my fave genres. I haven’t read the books so I didn’t know what to expect. This movie did remind me of ‘Twilight’, ‘Harry Potter’ and ‘The Mummy’ lol. It’s not a bad thing (or bad reminder) because overall I enjoyed the movie. I do believe this film franchise is a new replacement for twi-hearts and Harry Potter fans. The Mortal Instruments is a series of six young adult fantasy novels written by Cassandra Clare, of which five have been published so far. The last book, City of Heavenly Fire is scheduled for May 27, 2014 release. I do hope the next film script (as I predict this one will do well) is better written and has a better screenplay.

“Lee Daniels’ The Butler” Movie Review

The Butler banner pic

5 stars is all I’m saying about this movie. Fabulous ensemble cast, great storyline (from the book) and well acted! There’s so much that I can write that I liked about this movie but it would be pages long. Forest Whitaker (Cecil Gaines) should definitely get an Oscar nomination as should the movie. Oprah returns to the big screen and holds her own as Gloria Gaines. Honorable mentions are Elijah Kelley as Charlie Gaines…he added humor to the film; Cuba Gooding Jr. as Carter Wilson;  Alan Rickman and Jane Fonda as President and Mrs. Reagan; Mariah Carey has a small role yet it’s intense. Honestly, I thought all of the presidential performances were great. A few emotional scenes. Must see movie!
I’m so proud of Elijah! I had the opportunity of meeting him several years ago and working with him on events in Detroit.

I got a pic with Oprah at Disneyworld’s Grand Floridian Resort where she was staying (I was next door at the Polynesian). That was my first time getting a chance to talk with her for a few minutes (I attended many tapings of the OWS before she retired).

‘Kick-Ass 2’ Movie Review

KA2

I so enjoyed ‘Kick-Ass’ three years ago and was anticipating seeing the sequel that I was sure would bring more of what I liked from the original. My fave character is Mindy Macready/Hit-Girl and she didn’t disappoint. I didn’t think Jim Carrey gave anything new to this franchise (I didn’t like his initial decision to not promote the movie); I enjoyed Nicholas Cage’s character much better. This storyline is not as engaging yet it holds to it’s name. There’s more gore for those who enjoy that. Overall I liked it but the original is my fave. I did like the addition of Morris Chestnut who has a special relationship with Mindy Macready.

‘Paranoia’ Movie Review

I was excited about seeing a drama/thriller movie with a couple of my favorite actors. A similar storyline to many other movies yet this one has the twist of using futuristic technology as the focal point. Liam Hemsworth’s character, Adam is an entry level employee where he basically gets caught in the middle of a money war with his boss and his boss’ arch enemy. I thought the movie had slow moments that kept me from fully enjoying the movie. Liam has his shirt off a lot and it’s a good thing!

‘Elysium’ Movie Review

Elysium Banner

Sci-fi fans ‘Elysium’ doesn’t disappoint! The storyline initially builds slowly and then sets sail to being a pretty good sci-fi film (I love this genre). The storyline is futuristic Earth which is plagued by poverty, crime and sickness; meanwhile the rich and famous are at a sky-high luxury resort in the solar system and they don’t want the peasants there. I’m glad I ended up liking this movie since Matt left the ‘Bourne’ franchise it would have been disappointing for him to be in a new action movie that’s a flop. The special effects are FABULOUS.  This movie reminded me of ‘Mad Max’ (a futuristic one) and ‘District 9’ which has the same Director and writer, Neill Blomkamp. Another Summer popcorn flick to check out, enjoy.

‘Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters’ Movie Review

percy jackson banner

Here’s the second movie to the five book series. If you love fantasy/adventure movies, then this is the movie for you (and me). I enjoyed this movie more than the first ‘Percy Jackson: The Lightning Thief’. Percy, Grover, Annabeth and the others are on another quest to restore their dying safe haven, the son of Poseidon and his friends embark on a quest to the Sea of Monsters to find the mythical Golden Fleece while trying to stop an ancient evil from rising. Grover, my personal favorite character because he’s portrayed by metro Detroit’s own Brandon T. Jackson (who I know well and am so proud of). This is a family movie with lots of humor for ALL to enjoy. I saw it in 3D and recommend it.

‘We’re The Millers’ Movie Review

>were the Millers 2

Here’s a late Summer funny movie to check out. It’s not a “family” movie yet the synopsis is about a put-together family in route to pick up a large supply of marijuana and bring it back to the U.S. Well, as one would think there are many funny situations that occur in this trip. The cast of characters is pretty funny and I didn’t find Jennifer Aniston to be the star of the movie (even though I’m a fan of hers). There are really cute/funny out-takes at the end of the movie so don’t rush out the theatre. Worth checking out.

‘2 Guns’ Movie Review

2-Guns-2013-Movie-Title-Banner

I was really wondering how Denzel and Mark would gel together for such a movie like this. Well, their chemistry is right on point! This action/comedy/crime caper has a storyline to follow with lots of twists and good comedy between the leading men. Paula Patton (Deb) has a small role yet links with Denzel’s character (Bobby); heads up alert on the nudity (I was surprised Paula took a role that called for her to be nude). Denzel and Mark’s (Stig) characters are the good guys but they don’t find out until after awhile. A good movie worth checking out….get your popcorn at the concession stand.
