’12 Years a Slave’ Movie Review

It’s only to be expected that there are very intense scenes in this film, and that’s correct. This is a true story based on the book “Twelve Years a Slave” by Solomon Northup who is a free black man from upstate New York and is abducted and sold into slavery. Chiwetel Ejiofor gives a great performance as Solomon as do most of the actors in this film. There are scenes that are hard to watch so keep that in mind before viewing it.

‘Escape Plan’ Movie Review

They’re baaack! We have The Terminator and Rocky together in a new movie…it must be good, huh, lol. Well I enjoyed it. I went in thinking it would be a traditional storyline of a prison movie but it wasn’t. A new 21st Century spin that kept me engaged the whole time. Stallone and Schwarzenegger characters have chemistry and do expect a bit of their well-known characters to shine in this movie. An entertaining action popcorn flick that’s definitely worth checking out.

‘Machete Kills’ Movie Review

I really don’t think anyone actually is expecting much of a storyline; just action, gory scenes and humor. Well, that’s what I saw…all preceded with cheesy, lol. Pretty much the same as the first movie. Looks like they’re going to outer space, lol.

‘Captain Phillips’ Movie Review

One of the best films (true story) that I’ve seen this year. Yes, Tom Hanks definitely deserves an Oscar nomination. Even with this being a true story it needed to capture my attention and make me believe that this is happening for the first time; it did. The acting from the Somali pirates (the main two) was quite convincing. Barkhad Abdi portrayed, Muse and Mahat M. Ali portrayed, Elmi…their acting was crisp and riveting. This is a great film and I highly recommend it. By the way, as usual, the Navy Seals ROCK!!!!

‘The Inevitable Defeat of Mister & Pete’ Movie Review

This film is riveting with good acting from Jennifer Hudson (Gloria), Skylan Brooks (Mister/Gloria’s son) and Ethan Dizon (Pete). Yes, this is another film about mother’s who physically and/or emotionally abandon their children because of their addictions; yet the survival mode of the boys will capture your attention. The struggle of the boys without an adult in their lives had me crying a lot during the movie. I believe this is a breakout role for young Ethan Dizon who portrays Pete. His character was really challenged and showed what happens to younger children when their parents don’t have it together. Jennifer’s role is Oscar worthy…let’s see what happens. I hope Skylan and Ethan’s roles get recognition from one of the many film awards. Anthony Mackie has a small role (Kris) and is barely recognizable (bushy beard). Jordin Sparks has a small role as Alice; her character never tied into the story and made no sense to me; her acting was good. Jeffrey Wright does a good job in his role as he usually does. Definitely worth checking out.

‘Gravity’ Movie Review

I’m a sci-fi fan and I did enjoy this movie. The storyline is not that in depth and doesn’t give clarity on the back story of Sandra’s character, Ryan. For the most part, there are only two characters in the movie; the other is George’s character, Matt. I would have liked more to the ending after such a dramatic experience in outer space. The cinematography is absolutely beautiful; I did see it in 3D…if you can, do so. I thought Sandra’s performance was good but not Oscar worthy. Ed Harris (‘Apollo 13’) is the voice from Mission Control

‘Runner Runner’ Movie Review

Somewhat predictable yet the 90 minute flick held my attention. Ben’s character, Ivan, was a bit cut-throat and a good flip of characters since ‘Argo’. Justin didn’t bring any spark to his character, Richie. Not a great movie yet not bad. I consider this one a Fall popcorn flick.
