‘Respect’ Movie Review

Another good adaptation of Ms. Franklin’s young to young adult life. Great music.

‘Mariah Carey’s Magical Christmas Special’ via Apple TV+ review

Mariah would have to be the Queen of Christmas music! I purchased the “All I Want For Christmas” cd back in 1994 and I knew it was an instant classic. This musical special is delightful with great singing with a few special guest stars.

‘Sing’ Movie Review

Sing banner.png

What a cute movie! It’s all about singing animals and I don’t recall a mere mention about humans, lol. Overall, the movie held my attention. I saw it in Real D 3D yet 2D is probably fine.

‘Chi-Raq’ Movie Review

Chi Raq banner

I haven’t liked or enjoyed a Spike Lee film in many years. I was so leery to see this movie but I must say the premise of the storyline and the message makes this a movie of Spike’s that I’ve enjoyed in a long time (believe it or not). Now, there’s so much sex and vulgar language that you may not be able to focus of the message. A lot of the dialogue is spoken in “riddle form” so it helped me to focus on the words and the message. A great ensemble cast with Nick Cannon doing a pretty good job; Jennifer Hudson has a small role yet most of it she spends crying about a tragedy; John Cusack also has a good performance. Quite controversial referring to Chicago as an “Iraq” type land yet the statistics stand for themselves.

‘Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom’ Movie Review

Mandela banner

After watching an advance screening of ‘Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom’ I couldn’t help but to compare it to ‘Winnie’ that opened in Sept. I thoroughly enjoyed both films about His Excellency Nelson Mandela and his 2nd wife Winnie. Idris Elba whom I adore is getting Oscar buzz for his performance; should he get it…that would be great yet I didn’t see an Oscar performance. Naomie Harris holds her own as Winnie. I will say that I enjoyed “the acting performances” of Jennifer Hudson and Terrance Howard in ‘Winnie’ better. Both of them did a phenomenal job and their performances are Oscar worthy! Terrances’ role as Mandela is small in ‘Winnie’ yet quite good. ‘Winnie’ didn’t get the advertising dollars to promote it or box office sales and I haven’t heard any Oscar buzz for this film. ‘Winnie’ is told from her perspective as is ‘Mandela’ told from his perspective (based on the book). Winnie Mandela led a life full of struggles when her husband was imprisoned. If only 10% of the truth of her life is depicted in these films, then I can understand why she did the things she did (I don’t justify the crimes). Both are powerful films that everyone should see. I have been in the presence of Winnie Mandela once…she came to MI years ago and spoke at my church at the time. I didn’t realize what her struggle had been and I was only aware of the allegations about her. There’s aren’t many more accolades that I can give Madiba” or “Tata (b.k.a. Nelson Mandela He was just a strong man that didn’t allow the hardship of his life to harden his heart, wow!

‘Black Nativity’ Movie Review

black Nav cover

This is a Holiday musical that is depicted from the Play by poet Langston Hughes. With a well known ensemble cast, this film is current day yet recreates biblical scenes of the birth of Christ. The story is about love with inspiring moments especially with the music! Raphael Saadiq is the Executive Music Director and as usual he does a fabulous job (especially songs that were chosen for this film). The music from well known singers is wonderful and all others try to hold their own (lol). Nice movie to see this Holiday Season with family and friends.

‘The Inevitable Defeat of Mister & Pete’ Movie Review

mister

This film is riveting with good acting from Jennifer Hudson (Gloria), Skylan Brooks (Mister/Gloria’s son) and Ethan Dizon (Pete). Yes, this is another film about mother’s who physically and/or emotionally abandon their children because of their addictions; yet the survival mode of the boys will capture your attention. The struggle of the boys without an adult in their lives had me crying a lot during the movie. I believe this is a breakout role for young Ethan Dizon who portrays Pete. His character was really challenged and showed what happens to younger children when their parents don’t have it together. Jennifer’s role is Oscar worthy…let’s see what happens. I hope Skylan and Ethan’s roles get recognition from one of the many film awards. Anthony Mackie has a small role (Kris) and is barely recognizable (bushy beard). Jordin Sparks has a small role as Alice; her character never tied into the story and made no sense to me; her acting was good. Jeffrey Wright does a good job in his role as he usually does. Definitely worth checking out.

‘Winnie Mandela’ Movie Review

http://pinterest.com/carolyn563/muse-enthusiasts-movie-reviews-more/Winnie Mandela banner

Jennifer Hudson and Terrance Howard deliver stellar performances as Winnie & Nelson Mandela. The storyline is told from Winnie’s perspective (in my opinion) yet her faults are depicted as well. I have seen Winnie Mandela in person and I remember her mannerisms…Jennifer Hudson nails this role. I thought Terrance would give a mediocre performance yet I was pleasantly surprised by his great performance. The movie and their performances are Oscar worthy (we’ll see what happens). This film is presented by T.D. Jakes.
