‘Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom’ Movie Review

After watching an advance screening of ‘Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom’ I couldn’t help but to compare it to ‘Winnie’ that opened in Sept. I thoroughly enjoyed both films about His Excellency Nelson Mandela and his 2nd wife Winnie. Idris Elba whom I adore is getting Oscar buzz for his performance; should he get it…that would be great yet I didn’t see an Oscar performance. Naomie Harris holds her own as Winnie. I will say that I enjoyed “the acting performances” of Jennifer Hudson and Terrance Howard in ‘Winnie’ better. Both of them did a phenomenal job and their performances are Oscar worthy! Terrances’ role as Mandela is small in ‘Winnie’ yet quite good. ‘Winnie’ didn’t get the advertising dollars to promote it or box office sales and I haven’t heard any Oscar buzz for this film. ‘Winnie’ is told from her perspective as is ‘Mandela’ told from his perspective (based on the book). Winnie Mandela led a life full of struggles when her husband was imprisoned. If only 10% of the truth of her life is depicted in these films, then I can understand why she did the things she did (I don’t justify the crimes). Both are powerful films that everyone should see. I have been in the presence of Winnie Mandela once…she came to MI years ago and spoke at my church at the time. I didn’t realize what her struggle had been and I was only aware of the allegations about her. There’s aren’t many more accolades that I can give Madiba” or “Tata (b.k.a. Nelson Mandela He was just a strong man that didn’t allow the hardship of his life to harden his heart, wow!
