‘Self Made: Inspired by the Life of Madam C.J. Walker’ Netflix movie review

Self Made

Inspired by accounts about the first known black female entrepreneur, Madam C. J. Walker (Sarah Breedlove), who became a self made millionaire in America. She built her empire by selling hair care products to black women. This is a 4-part series on Netflix that’s informative and entertaining. I enjoyed learning more of her story which led me to further research accuracies from this series. It’s unknown what the sexual preference of Madam Walker’s daughter was yet this series makes a back storyline about her. Most importantly, I had only heard that Madam Walker invented the hot comb yet facts show otherwise. The hot comb seems to have been developed in France yet Madam Walker widened the teeth and then patented it. The series also depicts Alice Malone as a rival of Madam Walker. Actually, Walker was an apprentice to Malone; Walker used Malone’s recipe for the hair grower and started her own line with a mild change of the recipe. I knew very little about Alice Malone who also became a black female multi-millionaire in her own rights of hair products for black women. It was educational to learn about the successes of Madam Walker and Alice Malone. Worth checking out during this time when big screen movies are on hold due to the pandemic. Make sure you fact check.

‘Onward’ Movie Review

Onward

The imagination of a child’s mind can take them anywhere and believe almost anything. Full of lush colors that Disney and Pixar always deliver on. Good family movie to see with children. There’s a Simpsons animated short before the film.

‘Dolittle’ Movie Review

dolittle movie

Well, it’s best to not compare this new reboot to the other films of the same name. Probably only small children will enjoy the fantasy of talking animals yet the two children that were in the auditorium when I saw it ran through the aisle and up the stairs during the film, IJS.

‘Ma’ Movie Review

Ma movie

Well, there’s definitely a storyline to follow.  There are thriller-ish scenes but nothing I found that made me jump.  Octavia kept the humor going.  Now, the fuel seemed to run dry low towards the end.  There was the potential for a franchise to start here yet it died out and became real cheesy.  An okay movie.

‘Instant Family’ Movie Review

Instant Fam banner

I was expecting the usual Holiday comedy from Mark Wahlberg, yet this movie also has a lot of heart. This is a great Season to bring light to the process of families wanting to adopt children and the ups and downs of the blending and the system to make it happen.  Based on a true story.

‘The Shape of Water’ Movie Review

The Shape of Water banner

Although the genre is not identified as sci-fi that’s what I would label it.  This is of course an odd pairing…an water monster and a mute cleaning lady.  Well, loves blossoms between the two yet there’s a hunter who wants the monster under his control.  There’s  a little humor along the way.

‘Gifted’ Movie Review

Gifted movie

The child actress, McKenna Grace portrays Mary and she’s definitely got a future as an actress. The screen is quite engaging when she’s in a scene. Overall it’s a good ensemble cast for decent movie. Mary has to decide which lifestyle she loves best.

This is a beautiful heartwarming movie as we approach Resurrection Sunday (Easter). Christians and anyone curious about God’s love towards all men will enjoy this film. This is a great film for all.

‘Bad Santa 2’ Movie Review

bad-santa-2-banner

Well this naughty Christmas themed movie is back. I have yet to watch the 1st in its entirety so I can’t compare it. This one is raunchy and nasty. Fans of the original movie will probably enjoy this one. Yes, there are a few laugh out loud scenes. I was surprised to see Octavia Spencer is a cameo scene. There’s a back storyline that’s pretty sad.

‘The Divergent Series: Allegiant – Part 1’ Movie Review

allegiant 2 banner

Pretty cool! I’d agree with most critics that this is the best in the Divergent series. I enjoyed the mostly futuristic scenes and all of the action scenes. I saw it in IMAX and it was great! The storyline was good and held my attention. I did miss seeing two of the favorite villains thus far in this franchise (one from the last movie and another is a goner in this film). I didn’t wait to see if there’s an end credit scene 😦
